BioProtect

BioProtect devices are a family of patent-protected biodegradable biological implants that are introduced by minimally invasive procedures at the desired location under the guidance of US, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, laparoscopy, or left in place at the end of a surgical intervention.
BioProtect's first product (SpaceGuard BalloonTM) is indicated for prostate cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy treatments. The implant separates the prostate from healthy tissues and organs surrounding the prostate and thereby minimizes the applied radiation to these organs. The implant is designed to dissolve after 3-6 months, corresponding to the standard duration of radiotherapy procedures for prostate cancer. The implant is made of well know biodegradable material routinely used in existing medically approved devices (such as pericardial patch). The balloon insertion technique is based on a well-established technique commonly used by urologists at outpatient centers.
A multi center clinical trial in the US, Europe and Israel has been taking place since Q109 with 24 patients enrolled to date.

BioProtect is also developing a solution for slow drug release using its platform. The balloon can be used for both systemic and localized drug delivery. Systemically, the device can be used as a delivery solution for unstable hormones like: Growth Hormone, Erythropoietin and many more. When used locally, the device can be used as a complementary treatment for the specific balloon application.

BioProtect was founded with Xenia in 2004, matured incubator in 2006 and raised follow on funds from leading physicians and investors in Israel and the US.
